Abstract
The last decades of the 19th century saw a remarkable determination for the systematic study of the oceans. This stemmed from a variety of interests, ranging from the purely scientific to those arising from fisheries development. Gradually, new ways of investigating the sea and the new techniques that made this possible began to lay the foundations for a new scientific discipline: oceanography.
This paper addresses this issue for the Spanish context, tracing the evolution of the individual groups attracted by the nascent oceanographic science, their approaches to the discipline and the institutional backing their initiatives received. It is observed for the time frame studied how, after a series of actions in matters of biological-marine and fishing interest, oceanography traces its origins in the various receptions and the consequent dissemination of the discipline throughout the 1890s, especially in the naval sphere, both in its geographical/hydrographical interests and in biological-fishing matters.
With the beginning of the new century, there was a renewed interest among Spanish naturalists in a more comprehensive approach to the scientific study of the ocean and in promoting its study. Along with a more favourable political context and a more appropriate international situation, the institutional materialisation of the oceanographic discipline was achieve.
