Abstract
This study examines the previously unknown figure of the industrial engineer Pedro Bofill y Soler, born in Barcelona in 1844 into a family with a long industrial and technical tradition. An inventor and machinery builder, he was a railway pioneer in Barcelona and Mallorca. He settled in Palma in the last quarter of the 19th century, where he started a family with Amalia Miró-Granada, managed the first railway line in Mallorca, and established the first machinery manufacturing workshop.
In addition to designing and registering the first patent in Mallorca in 1879, he created a total of eight inventions between Barcelona and Mallorca, all of which are documented. His work as a machinery builder earned him renown and the appointment of mechanical expert for the Port of Palma de Mallorca, contributing to the industrialization of the Balearic Islands and Catalonia.
Bofill was also a pioneer in lignite mining on the island, dedicating himself, in the last stage of his life, to discovering and registering numerous lignite mines, improving their exploitation with two patents. He bequeathed to his son Narciso Bofill, also an industrial engineer, an important mining concession, which he developed and worked with quality production, necessary to feed the machinery of the Balearic Islands during the times of increased coal prices in the First World War.
