Resumen
La villa de Vallecas está situada al sureste y muy cerca de la ciudad de Madrid. Se encuentra en la zona de borde de un antiguo lago mioceno, donde afloran una gran variedad de rocas, tanto detríticas como de precipitación química. Por eso, en su territorio ha habido una gran tradición minera, con numerosas canteras y fábricas, particularmente de yeso, aunque también han existido minas de otros materiales de construcción, caso de arcillas, para ladrillo o tejas, o sílex, usado en la construcción de muros. En el presente artículo se pretende analizar la repercusión económica y social de la industria yesera vallecana, de tanta relevancia para el municipio, la evolución tecnológica acontecida en sus canteras y fábricas, las distintas modalidades de transporte empleadas a la largo del tiempo, cuestiones laborales, ambientales y legislativas, así como la vida de sus protagonistas, entre otros aspectos, pretendiendo lograr así una visión completa de este sector industrial.
Actualmente, la industria yesera local ha desaparecido y sus escasos restos patrimoniales están en peligro. Se han recopilado los datos existentes sobre esta minería hasta principios del siglo xx, así como se han reconstruido los procesos productivos en las explotaciones tradicionales y se realizan propuestas para salvaguardar el patrimonio material e inmaterial, memoria histórica de Vallecas.
Abstract
The village of Vallecas is located to the southeast and very close to the city of Madrid. It lies on the edge of an ancient Miocene lake, where a wide variety of rocks outcrop, both detrital and chemically precipitated. For this reason, the area has long had a strong mining tradition, with numerous quarries and factories, particularly of gypsum, although there were also mines for other construction materials such as clay —used for bricks and tiles— or flint, employed in the building of walls.
This article aims to analyse the economic and social impact of Vallecas’s gypsum industry —so significant for the municipality—, the technological developments that took place in its quarries and factories, the different modes of transport used over time, as well as labour, environmental and legislative issues, and the lives of the people involved, among other aspects. The objective is to provide a comprehensive view of this industrial sector. At present, the local gypsum industry has disappeared, and its few remaining heritage elements are at risk. The available data on this mining activity up to the early 20th century have been compiled, and the production processes of the traditional operations have been reconstructed. Proposals are also made to safeguard both the tangible and intangible heritage, which together form part of the historical memory of Vallecas.
