Une approche chronologique des indivisibles de Bonaventura Cavalieri

Resumen

L’article a pour but de mener une enquête destinée à déterminer la date de l’apparition du terme indivisible dans l’œuvre de Cavalieri. Quand le terme “indivisible” et l’expression “voie des indivisibles” ont-ils été employés pour la première fois par Cavalieri ? Dans quelle situation et avec quels objectifs ? Nous avons choisi pour répondre à ces questions d’analyser la correspondance de Cavalieri de manière systématique car elle nous donne un accès privilégié à l’apparition et à l’usage du mot “indivisible” dans une échelle diachronique. L’examen des écrits conservés de Cavalieri – notamment de sa correspondance – nous révèle en fait que l’expression “voie des indivisibles”, qui donne un rôle central aux indivisibles dans la configuration de sa nouvelle méthode, n’y apparaît pas avant 1632. Quant au terme “indivisible”, il n’est pas utilisé avant la mise en circulation des deux manuscrits exposant sa nouvelle démarche mathématique, le manuscrit de la Nova planorum ac solidorum speculatio in sex libros distributa et celui du Planorum et solidorum libri sex, achevés tous deux en 1627.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to conduct an investigation to determine the date of the appearance of the term indivisible in Cavalieri’s work. When were the term «indivisible» and the expression «way of the indivisibles» first used by Cavalieri? In what situation and with what purpose? To answer these questions, we have chosen to analyse Cavalieri’s correspondence systematically because it gives us privileged access to the appearance and use of the word «indivisible.» A chronological examination of Cavalieri’s surviving writings – notably his correspondence – reveals that the expression «way of the indivisibles», which gives a central role to the indivisibles in the achievement of his new method, does not appear before 1632.
